There are some subjects that, to put it neatly, are swept under the rug
The common thread is like a clothesline; you can hang objects on it of all sizes, colors, and weights. But a clothesline is just a clothesline because it is suspended between two points. You can undo it without any problem, roll it up, and carelessly store it in the attic. There it continues to gather dust until a girl on an exploration finds it and takes it along to use as a jump rope.
But would they still be tempted to make a statement like "the view is wrong, I think" if they paid more attention to the common thread to which their object is attached?
"I still find my own way
of philosophizing new, and it keeps striking me so afresh: that is why I
need to repeat myself so often. It will have become second nature to a
new generation, to whom the repetitions will be boring. I find them
necessary."
"Each
of the sentences is trying to say the whole thing, i.e. the same thing
over and over again: it is as though they were all simple views of one
object seen from different angels."
What is "das Ganze", "the whole thing", the "common thread" for Wittgenstein?
If you don't even attempt to put that into words, you end up in a rather unenviable position:
"It
is all one to me whether or not the typical western scientist
understands or appreciates my work, since he will not in any case
understand the spirit in which I write".
