Jan Hoet is overleden.
Dat geeft aanleiding tot allerhande in memoria.

Wat kunst is, wist ook Hoet niet. In 1991 zei hij: “Ik weet
niet wat kunst is. De kunst zelf zal ons vertellen wie ze is. Niet ik. Ik kan
alleen maar een ticket voor de ontdekkingsreis aanbieden.” In een speciale
aflevering van het magazine DMuze, dat De Morgen eind mei 2012 maakte voor Hoets
tentoonstelling Sint-Jan in Gent, schreef hij: “Ik weet nog altijd niet wat
kunst is."
"De kunst zelf zal ons vertellen wie ze is".
Als dat waar is, dan is de kunst uiteraard het luisteren.
Het toeval wil nu dat ik niets weet.
Dat vind ik niet erg.
Want het enige wat me dan rest is het luisteren.
De kunst is kort van stof.
"De kunst is niet", zegt ze, "de kunst wordt."
Jan Hoet had een zwak voor Jozef Beuys.
Ik ook.
Niet voor zijn kunstwerken.
Die zijn waardeloos.
Juist daarom.
To be a teacher (Beuys was teaching on the Düsseldorf Art Academy, fh) is my greatest work of art. The rest is the waste product, a demonstration. If you want to express yourself you must present something tangible. But after a while this has only the function of a historic document. Objects aren’t very important any more. I want to get to the origin of matter, to the thought behind it.

Afgedankte metalen rekken met kruidenierswaren uit het Oostblok.
Hij geeft er de titel "economische waarde" aan en Jan Hoet kon het nauwelijks betalen.
Het wordt een "goed" van onschatbare waarde.
"Man is really not freeing many aspects. He is dependent on his social circumstances, but he is free in his thinking, and here is the point of origin of sculpture. For me the formation of the thought is already sculpture. The thought is sculpture."
